Vision for the Valleys: A Narrow Gauge Link Through the Abernant Tunnel

Connecting Rhydycar West to Zip World & BikePark Wales – One Track at a Time

If we’re going to Make Merthyr Great Again, we need to think not just big, but smart.

In my last post, I shared my excitement about the proposed Rhydycar West development – a game-changer for Merthyr and all of Wales. But big attractions on their own aren’t enough. We need to think about how people get there, and how we connect all the amazing things we already have.

That’s why I want to put forward an idea that I believe could be transformative – and totally achievable with vision and backing.

The Idea: A Narrow Gauge Rail Link Through the Merthyr–Abernant Tunnel

The Merthyr to Abernant tunnel – once a vital lifeline of industry – has been sitting in darkness for decades. But it doesn’t have to stay that way.

I’m proposing a narrow gauge railway that would run through the tunnel, creating a direct and scenic link between Rhydycar West in Merthyr Tydfil and Hirwaun – where it could connect with Zip World, BikePark Wales, and the proposed Transport for Wales station at Hirwaun.

But Why Narrow Gauge?

Here’s the magic of it:

  • Narrow gauge railways have a charm of their own – just look at Ffestiniog, Talyllyn or the Brecon Mountain Railway. They’re a tourist attraction, not just a transport solution.

  • They require less space than standard rail, which means we could run the railway and a shared cycle and walking path side-by-side through the tunnel.

  • This makes it a sustainable, low-carbon travel corridor, linking nature, leisure, and heritage.

Imagine it: tourists hopping on a beautiful little mountain railway, riding through a historic tunnel, stepping off right near Zip World or BikePark Wales – or cycling the whole way safely and easily through the Valleys landscape.

What It Links

  • Rhydycar West: Indoor ski slope, adventure resort, leisure hub

  • BikePark Wales: World-renowned downhill MTB trails

  • Zip World Tower: Thrills, family fun, and iconic views

  • Hirwaun Town: Local businesses, new TFW station, potential for a visitor centre

  • Merthyr Tydfil: High street, Cyfarthfa Park, cultural heritage

This would unite two communities and four major attractions in one seamless, green, fun corridor.

Jobs, Tourism, and Community Benefits

This isn’t just about railways and tunnels – it’s about people.

  • New construction and tourism jobs

  • Boost to independent businesses in Hirwaun and Merthyr

  • Increased footfall to all attractions

  • A safe, scenic route for cyclists and walkers

  • A greener way to travel in and around the Valleys

It’s a gateway to the outdoors, a history trail, a family day out, and a commuter link – all in one.

Let’s Be Bold

The tunnel is already there. The history is already written. The attractions already exist. What we need now is vision.

Just like with Rhydycar West, I know there will be questions: funding, engineering, environment. But those challenges shouldn’t stop us dreaming big for Merthyr and smart for Wales.

We’ve got the land, the talent, and the reason. Now we need the will.

A Final Thought

I believe in Merthyr. I believe in the Valleys. I believe we can create something unique here – a joined-up experience that makes tourists stay longer, spend more, and fall in love with this place the way I always have.

This narrow gauge rail and active travel link isn’t just a transport idea – it’s a symbol of connection, growth, and hope.

So let’s think beyond the now. Let’s look down that dark old tunnel – and imagine the light coming through at the other end.
