Back to Barry – The 80s Weekender!
Every now and then, you get an idea that just fits - and this is one of them.
Picture this: it’s August, the middle of the six-week holidays, and Barry Island is buzzing. There’s music in the air, shoulder pads on the prom, leg warmers on the beach, and the unmistakable sound of Cher belting out “If I Could Turn Back Time” across the seafront.
Welcome to Back to Barry - The 80s Weekender.
A full weekend every summer dedicated to the best decade of music, style, and good times. Think live tribute acts, classic 80s tunes on the speakers, neon everywhere, and people coming together to celebrate all things retro - all with the Barry Island charm we know and love.
What’s the vibe?
We’re talking:
-
Live music and tribute acts performing the best of Bon Jovi, Whitney, Madonna, Queen, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, and more.
-
80s fancy dress – dig out that old shell suit, go full glam rock, or recreate your best New Romantic look.
-
Pop-up food and drink stalls with retro vibes and crowd-pleasers.
-
Retro market stalls – vinyl records, vintage clothes, badges, posters, sweets, memorabilia.
-
A true community atmosphere – singing along, dancing on the prom, and making memories with your mates, your nan, and your kids.
It doesn’t need rides or big gimmicks. It’s about the music, the nostalgia, and a proper laugh - Barry style.
Should it be free?
Yes. It should absolutely be free. Barry thrives when people turn up in their thousands – and this could become the event of the summer if it’s open to everyone.
So how do you fund it?
Smart funding ideas:
Local sponsorships – pubs, cafes, shops and other businesses benefit from big footfall. Let them sponsor a stage or branded feature.
Affordable stall fees – from food to vintage vinyl, keep it fair but help fund the fun.
"Back to Barry" merch – tote bags, cassette keyrings, mugs and tees designed by locals.
VIP wristbands – optional add-ons with perks like early access, seating zones etc
Council support – it’s great for tourism, local pride, and showing the Vale has imagination
Why Barry?
Because Barry is nostalgia. People don’t just visit - they return. It’s where generations came for their holidays, their fish and chips, their first kiss on the prom.
It's also easily acessable by train and bus from Cardiff
Let’s make it happen
Every August, Barry Island should be glowing with colour, pumping with tunes, and full of energy.
It’s time to dance again. Time to sing again.
Time to show the world that Barry doesn’t just live in the past - we celebrate it.
Back to Barry - The 80s Weekender
Let’s make it a tradition. Let’s make it unforgettable.
And most of all - let’s make it ours.
